Many Little Squiggles
One Little Squiggle has big potential, but...
What if the squiggle becomes something new?
What if it's longer, or shorter, or blue?
What if it's yellow or purple and brown?
What if it's sideways or upside down?
Does changing the squiggle change what you see
and spark your creativity?
When one little squiggle becomes something new,
imagine the doodle fun waiting for you!

Many Little Squiggles

The character concepts are complete! Many Little Squiggles will feature two main characters: the girl from One Little Squiggle AND...her younger brother! Consequently, the first step in the illustration process was to determine what the younger brother would look like. Illustrator Polina Gortman delivered four character concepts for the boy (who is loosely based on my son, Nolan), and this is the one we selected for the book:

Following a few minor refinements, it was time to choose a color palette for the boy. Polina delivered five color concepts for him, and this is the final color scheme we chose for the book:

The interior sketches are complete! Once the characters were finalized, Polina started on the sketches for the interior of the book. Over the last four months, she and I have been collaborating to create and refine those sketches, and they are finally complete! Here is a peek at the revised versions of the first several spreads:

Aren't they beautiful?! Polina has done an excellent job of bringing this new Squiggleville adventure to life, and I can't wait to see where she takes it from here! 🙌
So, what's next? Polina has started converting the interior sketches to final colored artwork, a process that takes about three months to complete. The first batch of final art is due later this month. In addition, Polina will finalize the book's cover art over the next month or so.
As for me, I will spend the next month reviewing and selecting public squiggle art for the book, a process that is both fun and full of hard decisions. Once the pieces have been selected, I will email each artist's guardians to ask permission to showcase their squiggle art. Wish me luck! 🤞👍
